Time Away From a Charger vs Time Available for Charging

In addition to how far an ambulance typically travels in between charge points, i.e., hospitals and the station, it is also important to consider how long the ambulance will be on a call, and how long it will be available for charging. An e-ambulance running the vehicles air conditioning or heating system on scene for multiple hours will have a significant drain on the ambulances battery. Similarly, an ambulance that is required to do an offload delay for multiple hours at a hospital equipped with a charge point, will have a choice opportunity to give itself a full recharge.

Note: This data is an average collected over several shifts by one paramedic using a trip logging app on a smart phone and odometer readings. While these numbers do offer valuable insight into the feasibility of an electric ambulance, a more thorough investigation should be completed to support these results.
