BC Emergency Health Services To Deploy EVs in 2022\23

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) will deploy it's first electric vehicles in FY 2022\23. This is a big win for paramedics at CUPE 873 who have supported initiatives to see clean energy vehicles deployed where they work. The information was made public at a BCEHS provincial board meeting. Six support vehicles (likely ford Mach-Es) with emergency lights and sirens, and one type two transfer ambulance, and six charging sites, are planned for the deployment. A 10 year savings is estimated at $1,182,521 and 1,088 Tons CO2e. Included in the presentation was a slide that demonstrated that the carbon footprint of BCEHS is comparable to all of PHSA's (The health authority BCEHS operates under) other operations. This is important to note as it makes clear that BCEHS must transition to clean energy vehicles in order to comply with Health Minister Adrian Dix's mandate letter to reduce public fleet emissions by 40% from 2007 levels. With this deployment BCEHS will claim the title for the first e-ambulance deployment in Canada, and the largest deployment of EVs in a Canadian ambulance service to date.
